Marouane Fellaini, a former midfielder for Manchester United and Everton, has announced his retirement from professional football.
After spending four years with the Chinese team, Shandong Taishan, Fellaini chose to conclude his 18-year playing career in November.
The Belgian international, who played 87 games for his country, began his career at Standard Liege and then spent significant time with Everton and United.
“I am writing this post to announce that after a career of 18 years, I am retiring from professional football,” Fellaini posted to Instagram.
“What an amazing adventure this has been! I’m incredibly appreciative to have competed at the top level in my favorite sport.
“I am honored to have played for Shandong in China, Everton and Manchester United in the United Kingdom, and Standard in Belgium.”
China’s Taishan. Playing for the Belgian national team at the 2008 Olympics, the 2016 Euro, and the 2014 and 2018 World Cups was an honor.
“I would like to use this opportunity to express my gratitude to all of the amazing fans I have had the pleasure of performing for throughout the course of my career. I have always been inspired by your enthusiasm and words of support.
“As I embark on this new chapter in my life, I look forward to new challenges, but be assured, I will continue to support the beautiful game in any way I can.”
While playing for Manchester United, Fellaini won the FA Cup and the Europa League, and also assisted Belgium in to finish third in the 2018 World Cup before leading Shandong to league and cup victories.
